How much have YOU spent on iraq lately?

Posted by Sopan Greene on August 15, 2007

See how much money you are spending on the illegal Iraq invasion and occupation. So far America has spent 456,100,000,000 on this illegal invasion. If we find that much money to invade another country and kill people, how is it that we don’t enough money to feed every American and educate every child and provide health care for every citizen? It’s called priorities. And in America they are topsy turvey, sideways and upside down with B.S. politics, personal power and profits always coming ahead of serving the people. It’s wrong and we have to change it.

The National Priorities Project has created a map where you can click on your state to see how much you’re paying for the Iraq invasion and occupation. Click on a state to find a list of the cities, towns and counties for which we have calculated the taxpayer cost of the Iraq War. For more information about the cost of the Iraq War, and what to do if you don’t find your hometown, click here. The taxpayer cost of the Iraq War is broken down for various towns, cities and counties across the U.S. The breakdown is based on a total cost of $456 billion. Around $378 billion has already been spent or allocated by Congress and now Congress will debate additional war spending, which NPP estimates around $78 billion would be for the Iraq War. The $456 billion number is the total if Congress were to approve the addional spending requested. Other ways of breaking down this money are:

The estimate is based on an NPP analysis of the legislation appropriating money for the Iraq War, the most recent administration request submitted in February 2007, and Congressional Research Service reports.

The CRS reports were based not just on Congressional appropriations, but on the Department of Defense’s (DOD) DFAS monthly obligations reports indicating funds transferred from other functions to the Iraq War.

The state-level costs in the table are computed based on how much each state contributes in tax revenues, according to IRS data.

The local-level costs are based on the state costs, and on relative population and income levels in each location. These numbers were updated for the latest IRS data in Sept 2006.

The population and household amounts are based on Census Bureau estimates: population as of February 2007; households for 2005. The taxpayer amount is based on IRS projected taxfilers for the 2005 tax year.
